It is a wonderful thing to be able to offer a place of relief to weary travelers who find a refuge at Safe Harbor. Obviously, the women who are homeless, who struggle to find a cool place that welcomes them to stay for awhile, greatly appreciate our open arms and doors.
But this summer we have received an overwhelming number of desperate phone calls from women trying to get into our residential program. We usually have a steady stream of applications – always more than we can accommodate, sadly. In July, the demand and need for what we are doing here has been astounding. Our phone log book reflects calls from men and women who are looking for somewhere to go, somewhere to get help with putting the pieces of their lives back together. We refer people to the resources we know about; but unfortunately, when it comes to shelters designed for the special needs of women, there are no others anywhere near us.
If you are reading this email message, you are in a unique position. You are somehow already connected to the work of Safe Harbor. You are becoming more aware of the needs in our community. You must have a desire to make a difference and you are, just by caring enough to understand the need. Some of you are volunteers, many of you are donors, many are prayer partners. All of us together are letting God shine into our community with more than just a temporary solution to human need. We need your continued support in all these ways. Thank you for being a part of this amazing ministry.
We will always need your help. I want to gently challenge you to think about what Jesus taught us about sacrifice for “the least of these.”
“The place where God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
